How Ethoca Alerts Work

Ethoca is a Mastercard-owned alert network that connects merchants directly to issuing banks. When a cardholder contacts their bank to dispute a transaction, the bank pauses the chargeback process and sends a notification through the Ethoca network. That notification reaches Corepay, and we forward it to you immediately with the transaction details and a window to act.

If you issue a refund or confirm resolution within the alert window (typically 24-72 hours), the chargeback process stops entirely. No chargeback is filed, no chargeback fee is assessed, and your chargeback ratio is unaffected. If you choose not to respond or the alert expires, the dispute proceeds as a standard chargeback.

Ethoca Consumer Clarity

In addition to the alert network, Ethoca offers Consumer Clarity, a feature that provides cardholders with detailed transaction information directly within their banking app. When a customer does not recognize a charge, Consumer Clarity displays the merchant name, purchase details, and itemized receipt before the customer files a dispute.

This reduces disputes from customer confusion, which is one of the most common causes of friendly fraud in subscription and digital product categories. Merchants enrolled in Consumer Clarity typically see fewer disputes reaching the alert stage because customers resolve their questions without contacting the bank at all.

Ethoca vs. Verifi: Which Do You Need?

Ethoca and Verifi are the two primary pre-dispute alert networks. They operate on different card networks and have different strengths, and most merchants benefit from using both.

Ethoca focuses on Mastercard disputes and has stronger international issuer coverage. Verifi focuses on Visa disputes and covers both fraud and non-fraud dispute types, which gives it broader utility for some merchant categories. The two networks do not overlap, so enrolling in both maximizes your pre-dispute coverage across all major card types.

We manage both enrollments through CB-Alert, which consolidates your alert response workflow into one interface. You see alerts from both networks in one place and can respond to them with one click.

Who Benefits Most from Ethoca Alerts?

Ethoca alerts deliver the highest return for merchants in categories with elevated chargeback exposure. These include subscription billing, nutraceuticals, digital content, iGaming, and any business where customers may dispute charges through their bank rather than requesting refunds directly.

Merchants approaching Mastercard’s chargeback ratio threshold of 1.5% or Visa’s VAMP merchant standard of 1.50% should treat alert enrollment as a priority. The cost of alerts is a small fraction of the fees, rate increases, and account risks associated with operating above chargeback thresholds.
